Application for Nenkin/ Pension Lump Sum Withdraw in Japan

Application for Nenkin/ Pension Lump Sum Withdraw in Japan

1. What is Nenkin?

Nenkin is a pension insurance payment, which is a mandatory contribution for all citizens over 20 years old living and working in Japan, including foreign nationals. For technical interns—who are foreign workers in Japan returning to their home countries after a few years—they are unable to receive pension benefits like Japanese citizens when they retire.

Therefore, foreign workers who have completed their tax obligations while working and living in Japan are entitled to receive a tax refund upon returning to their home country. This refund is called Nenkin (Nenkin insurance in Japan).

2. How is Nenkin Calculated?

The amount is calculated based on the duration of your insurance contributions in Japan. Below is an average estimate; the actual amount will depend on your salary and the length of your insurance contributions.

For example, if your average salary is 200,000 yen:

  • 6 to 12 months: ~105,000 yen
  • 12 to 18 months: ~210,000 yen
  • 18 to 24 months: ~310,000 yen
  • 24 to 30 months: ~420,000 yen
  • 30 to 36 months: ~540,000 yen
  • 36 to 41 months: ~650,000 yen
  • 41 to 47 months: ~760,000 yen
  • 48 to 53 months: ~860,000 yen
  • 54 to 59 months: ~980,000 yen
  • Over 60 months: ~1,100,000 yen

If you are currently employed and contributing to labor insurance, you may receive from 0.4 to 2.6 months of your standard salary, depending on your contribution period. The standard salary is calculated by taking the total income during the insurance period (salary + bonuses, before tax) and dividing it by the total number of months of insurance contributions.
